You hear that!? 400 freaking pounds! Much of that appears to be from simply shrinking it. It will be about 15" shorter, and 6.5" narrower. This is just what the Mustang needs.
Additional info from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! : It will be on average about 9% smaller overall, which accounts for nearly 400 lbs with my basic math (3500*.11=385lbs), and additional weight savings will be achieved by putting the chassis together more efficiently and using more aluminum. So braces are being lightened, given additional spot welds, maybe some high strength steel, etc., etc.

Hmm, narrower? I hope they don't lose any interior space.

Only thing the Mustang ever needs is Moar Powah

Ok, now things are getting serious. It's dropping 400lbs AND getting IRS like the rest of the civilized world? I need to reserve myself a test drive early.
I still think it's too fat (I don't like many cars over 3000lbs) but it's all headed in a good direction.

TT V10 Mustang or GTFO, Ford!

It could probably survive an inch or two from the center console, and a few inches from the width of the doors. They'll probably take most of the length out of the bumpers and trunk, as well.

We will not stop until the base Mustang has 500 hp!

V10? GTFAC

6.5 inches is a lot, its going to get tighter in there for sure. Though it could be more effective use of space, expect it to get a little trimmer in there.

It's not like they don't make them...

So you are saying more like the one on the right than the one on the left? AWESOME

Basically, yes. Imagine the one on the right with an aluminum motor and significant chassis improvements. And different looks.

Maybe I should rephrase that. It will look more like the one on the left, but be the size of the one on the left...

Something like that, yeah. Imagine how much weight they could lose by just lowering that belt line to the classic level.

So does that mean we're actually going to see a 3,100-3,200 Mustang GT, or does this massive weight loss only apply to a 2.3T SVO vs. 2014 V6 coupe comparison?
A Mustang GT that light would be insane with a guaranteed 400+ HP at your right foot's command and IRS.

I'd guess that the 400 lb+ weight loss is to the respective engine setup. As in, the chassis itself is going to be 400 lbs lighter. I think that means we could see a sub-3000 lb EcoBoost SVO.

That's not good. As a man of generous proportions 6'5" 210lbs I need a car to be comfortable enough for me to get to the job at hand.

I see. I was kind of hoping that Ford might throw their hat into the RWD lightweight ring with a separate car since the Toyobarus came to market and Chevy showcased the 130R concept, but I'm still anticipating good performance from the SVO.

So here's the question: At that size and weight, what will be it's more natural competitor, the 86/BRZ or the Camaro?
Obviously because of the history between the Camaro and Mustang, they will forever be competitors, but ignoring that, and just looking at the cars themselves with fresh eyes, I wonder...
![]() 08/14/2013 at 19:01 |

I think they'll still be shooting for the Camaro, but its curb weight will be MUCH closer to that of the BRZ86. With that being the case, the Camaro will have some catching up to do.

Well, if we take 2" from the center console, 1.25" from each door, and reduce the seat clearance on either side by 1/2", we arrive at 6.5" of width savings. I imagine it won't be far off from that. Those doors are pretty thick, after all.

Fair enough. Just please keep any leg room.

I completely agree that the competition in Ford's mind is the Camaro, but from an enthusiast standpoint - if you woke up tomorrow with amnesia, not knowing anything about the history of the Mustang and the Camaro, don't you think you would be at least a little tempted to lump the 3100 pound Mustang into the same category as the 2800 BRZ rather than the 3800 pound Camaro?
![]() 08/14/2013 at 19:25 |

Possibly, although the engine choices are almost entirely different. That is, until the SVO reincarnation comes out. Then that will probably be right around 2900 lbs or so, maybe 3000, and will definitely be cross-shopped with the BRZ.

I'm sure the length will come out of the trunk and the bumper/radiator area. Looks to me like there's lots of room to work with there. I don't think they can remove anything else from the backseat, though.
